Plans. A single monthly fee covers all your cameras, but there are three options to choose from.
The basic plan gives you 30 days of video history for motion-activated events, and the next plan gives you 60 days of video history, with the last 10 days being continuously recorded. All Nest Aware plans add activity zones and little extras like face recognition on some models.
Some brands give you a small amount of cloud storage for free, others don't give anything for free, and some get around the problem by recording everything onto an SD card for local storage.
That brings its own problems (what happens if a burglar walks in and takes the camera and evidence?). Some off-site storage is a must if you're serious about security.

What's a little hard to bear is that some manufacturers won't enable some of your camera's features — intercom, action zones, face recognition — unless you pay for the subscription.
Hopefully, the occasions when these cameras do the real business of recording and catching intruders are rare. So what these extras offer is everyday value, especially two-way communication for a home intercom.
The only essential features of these devices are that they can record videos and live streams 24/7, that they have a night vision mode, that they can detect when there is a person or movement, that they record the footage when they do so and that they will notify you on your phone.
Capturing and streaming in Full HD resolution is the minimum, as it allows you to zoom in on the footage and get a decent look at the culprit. If you want sharper shots and more detail, look for a camera that supports 2K or Capable of recording 4K resolutions.
A wireless device is nice and portable, but if you want to place your camera in a specific place, it is not necessary. If you go wireless, make sure that the battery life is very good.
There's also the indoor/outdoor option - it's becoming more common for brands to offer security cameras that work both inside and outside the home, although there are dedicated indoor and outdoor cameras too.

Designed specifically for use with Apple HomeKit Secure Video, the Logitech Circle View could be the ideal security camera for Apple fans. The successor to the popular Circle 2, the View has similar specs, including 1080p video, a 180-degree Field of view, two-way talk and IP64 weather protection.
The latter is particularly interesting as it allows this camera to be used both indoors and outdoors. If you're doing the installation outdoors, just be aware that you'll probably have to drill a hole in your house to run the cable through.
Also inside, the 3 meter long white power cable looks rather ugly against the black camera. This is doubly so if you wall mount the camera as there is no easy way to hide this cable. We like the ingenuity of the stand, that folds 180 degrees so you have privacy and the camera can't see what you're up to.
There is no app for this camera and it only works within Apple HomeKit where it shows up as a camera, motion sensor and LUX (light) sensor. Currently only the motion sensor can be used to trigger routines.
Thanks to the release of iOS 14, the camera now supports activity zones, allowing you to focus on the areas you want to monitor. You also get built-in people, animal, and vehicle detection.
Of course, videos can be recorded on Apple's secure servers thanks to HomeKit Secure Video, although you'll need a HomeKit hub (a HomePod, Apple TV, or iPad) to use this feature.
With its super wide 180 degree field of view, this camera captures it all. Its 1080p video is actually quite good with rich colors and excellent detail.

The best HomeKit smart camera is a bit of a vague term right now — and given that this camera actually has Alexa built-in, you're right to question our thinking.

We're still in its infancy and would rather recommend a great security camera that works well with HomeKit than one we haven't fully tested yet (we're looking at Eve Cam and Logitech View) - but come back to this one for a revisit Guide if they end up impressing us.
Going back to the Ecobee and what you get, as mentioned, plus the ability to sync with Apple's Home app, Alexa is built-in; so it doubles as something of a smart speaker.
Nest Cam IQ users already have the Google Assistant built right into their cameras, but this is a first for Amazon's digital assistant.
Aside from the smart home voice control of the new SmartCam, it also offers a decent range of camera specs and features like 1080p HD video with 180° field of view, people detection, activity zones, two-way talk, night vision and it also has a nifty feature for white noise, making it a pretty good option for a smart baby monitor.
The SmartCam is the face of Ecobee's new Haven home monitoring app, which uses not only the new smart security camera, but also the new SmartSensor for doors and windows, existing Ecobee temperature sensors and the smart thermostat to do things like auto-arm , to provide geolocation settings and the like.

Eufy has been quickly recognized by top smart home companies, and the EufyCam 2 is another quality product. This model does it all, with 1080p video recording, 365-day battery life, IP67 weather protection, and no cloud video subscription. Oh , and did we mention it's also compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit?
Although the EufyCam 2 is wireless, this model needs to be connected to the Eufy HomeBase 2. You can buy a kit with everything you need and then buy additional security cameras if you need them up to 16 cameras.
The advantage of this system is that, like Arlo cameras, you get excellent range thanks to a proprietary, low-power wireless connection instead of using regular WiFi. And the hub can be used for other Eufy devices, including its smart video doorbell and the alarm system.
Video quality fell a bit short of the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor during the day, although the video was still sharp. We found night vision footage to be better than Nest's cameras.
There's 16GB of storage on the hub, which gives you free offline storage, although you can upgrade to Eufy's cloud storage, which is $2.99 a month for a camera for a 30-day history, or $9.99 USD per month for up to 10 cameras.
You can use HomeKit Secure Video, but unless you're deeply immersed in the Apple ecosystem, there's very little reason to as you get more features and customization with the Eufy app.
To reduce notifications, the Eufy app lets you set activity zones and also enables people detection. Battery life is up to a year per camera, although the load on an area you're monitoring will affect this.
If you want a high-quality, subscription-free wireless security camera system, this is your top choice.

A second entry for Nest, but if you're after something for the outdoors, this one's a Dusky - albeit with the same Nest Aware caveats we mentioned for its indoor brethren above. Like the Indoor, the IQ Outdoor has a range of advanced tracking capabilities with a focus on detecting and tracking people around you.
It's noticeably larger than its indoor equivalent and the non-IQ outdoor Nest Cam, but that means casual intruders are more likely to notice it.
Installation is a bit of a hassle, as with any outdoor tech that requires wiring to the mains. Essentially, you have to drill a hole through the wall to connect it. If you have an outside power supply this will work, but you have to hide the 7.5m cable.
The IQ Outdoor's camera has a 1/2.5-inch, 8-megapixel (4K) color sensor with 12x digital zoom and enhanced close-up and a 130-degree diagonal viewing angle. As with the indoor variant, the camera actually zooms in and follows people automatically, and you also get all alerts about people and familiar people.
To deter unwanted lingers on your property, the IQ Outdoor features Nest's Talk and Listen HD audio technology, so you can yell at any strangers you don't like - and they'll, thanks to the large . clearly hear speakers on the base. You'll also hear their response due to an upgraded 3-mic array.
Google Assistant isn't built-in for obvious reasons, but you can control powering on and off and view the Nest stream on a Chromecast-enabled device through a Google Home speaker. Likewise with Alexa and an Echo device with a display.

The new 'With Siren' model is pretty much identical to the old Netatmo Presence in every way, apart from the 105dB siren. The clue is in the name.
This means you get a weatherproof Full HD security camera (4MP sensor) with a 12W floodlight and a 100 degree field of view from a range of 20m.
It's a fairly unique offering that definitely screams "security," but at the same time fits nicely into Netatmo's ever-expanding portfolio of smart home products
One thing that always sets Netatmo's security cameras apart from their competitors is that the footage is stored on a microSD card, which can also be encrypted and uploaded to Dropbox or your own FTP server.
Thanks to the company's "deep learning algorithms" refined on the popular Welcome camera, Presence can record and analyze in real time if someone or something is roaming your building. It pings you in the easy-to-use Netatmo Security app with smart notifications and lets you know if a person, car or animal has been seen. These notifications can also be customized depending on how much detection information you need.

The Reolink RLC-810A is a budget security camera capable of recording 4K video. That's right, for less than $100 you get 4K video that looks incredible and delivers a level of sharpness that other cameras can match during the day and night can only dream at night.
Build quality is pretty impressive too, thanks to the metal rather than plastic body. However, lowering the price has meant some trade-offs: there's no Wi-Fi, and you'll need to connect this camera via Ethernet. You can use PoE to supply power over the Ethernet cable supply, although you will need to provide your own power source for this.
You get basic camera controls, including activity zones and schedules (one for notifications, one for camera recording), as well as people and vehicle object detection. All video is recorded on a microSD card that is inserted into the camera and the cloud service from Reolink does not currently support this model.
Although Reolink has Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant Skills, the RLC-810A is currently not supported.
It may be simple, but the fact of the matter is this camera shoots excellent video quality that's far sharper than most of its competitors. If all you want is the best footage, this great value camera is fantastic.

Smart home surveillance cameras: Technical jargon explained
resolution
The size (in pixels) of the video that the camera is recording. Most cameras have at least a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, which is the equivalent of an HD television. At this resolution, you will get sufficiently sharp video in most cases to see what happens, although some cameras can use high video compression, which reduces image quality.
For more detail, you need a camera that can record at 2K (2048 x 1080) or even 4K (3840 x 2060). The downside of higher resolution cameras is that they require more storage space to store the video files.
night vision
The ability of a camera to record video in the dark. Most cameras use infrared (IR) LEDs to illuminate the night and record video in black and white.
Night vision means you can see what's going on at all times, although IR tends to soften the image.
Some cameras use a variety of techniques to capture color video at night, either using a spotlight to increase ambient light or using more sensitive camera sensors. Full color night vision gives you more detail.
Wired
These cameras need to be plugged into the mains, which usually makes them cheaper.
Another benefit is that you don't have to worry about handling batteries and the cameras will work as long as they have power.
Wireless
These battery powered cameras are easier to place as you don't have to worry about running a power cord. You have to keep them charged and you usually pay more for the privilege.
Wireless cameras often have fewer features than their wired counterparts and rely on PIR motion detection (see below).

All security cameras can use motion detection to start recording automatically. There are two main methods. PIR motion detectors use the same technology used in alarm motion detectors.
