Samsung SGH-A737 Slide-Telefon (AT&T)

I bought this phone hoping to carry one less device by installing a 4GB Micro SD chip and using it as an MP3 player. OVERALL RATING 2 stars (average of my phone and mp3 reviews) A737 AS A PHONE: 3 stars , it's good enough.Other reviews have complained about durability and battery life.So far mine hasn't broken and I agree the battery life is short. The will make me want to leave it plugged into the computer overnight to charge (with a USB cable). Nice to be able to charge via USB rather than carry an AC charger when traveling. Indoor use is better than my previous phone (Sony Ericsson T610) which didn't work well at my home Use the device on an airplane to play mp3 files for example or backup the phone's address book to your laptop. I don't have a data plan. If you want to pay the extortionate monthly fee for data, you should get a smartphone that makes better use of it. Many features that require a data plan clog the interface even without a data plan. For example, if you press the AT&T logo (select key) it pauses and says the connection failed. You then have to press OK and then Back and then confirm, that you want to exit the browser, 3 different button presses just to cancel the unavailable function. This button is prominent on the phone and I had to learn NOT to press it from the main screen. I wish the phone knew or experienced that it does not have a data plan and keeps data-dependent features from getting in the way. On the other hand, there's a conveniently configurable menu on another button from which you can select the features you actually use. That alleviates my complaints in the previous paragraph - aside from the AT&T logo button that launches the browser. A737 AS AN MP3 PLAYER: 1 Star As an MP3 player, it's almost useless. connected via an adapter and they sound decent when the music is playing but not as good as on my cheap but old Creative Zen Nano Plus MP3 player means two loud pops between tracks. Usually the first half second of the song It's truncated. Every time I press buttons to navigate the menus on the phone, I hear the same LOUD *POP*. There's a pause between songs - sometimes short, sometimes long, sometimes stuck, until I press any buttons. The volume slider only has 5 levels over a wide range from too quiet to loud. I have to use step 4 even though it's louder than I'd like because step 3 is way too quiet for me to work with my zen so I can a Play album in order or any mp3s in any order I choose. The only option is to create a playlist for each folder. Without a playlist you can only play by album and artist. I had hope when I saw that I could rate each song as it played, but this feature is useless. I played songs for two hours and rated each of them. The ratings are available on the phone, but I can't get the ratings back into my mp3 library using any of the three mp3 transfer mechanisms - windows media player, the included multimedia manager (which has a column to show the rating but doesn't seem to have a setting), or the USB mass storage setting copy with file manager. Battery life for playing music is poor: maybe 3 hours, about the same as making a phone call. If you play a lot of music during a flight, you won't be able to use the phone upon landing. VARIOUS COMMENTS The phone came with a charger and nothing else .I had to buy adapters to connect to USB (for charging and transferring data) and to use standard 2.5mm (1/8") stereo headphones. You'll probably want to buy a lot of accessories to do that They would be cheap unless there is high postage and no seller has them all.Contrary to some reviews on Amazon I CAN use 4GB Micro SD chip in this phone, the Kingston chip works well. The 1 megapixel camera comes in handy sometimes when I don't have my real camera with me.The quality is on par with mobile phones but not comparable to using a dedicated one Camera. The AT&T plan I have includes SMS text messaging. People can email me a 10-digit email -phone-number@txt.att.net, which is handy, but I can't reply to them without a data plan, except via SMS on their phone Address book applications are fine. The supplied PC software works, although with a non-intuitive user interface and a text and help file written by someone who does not speak English very well. The Multimedia Manager takes far too long (2 minutes on average each) to load MP3 Transfer files to or from the phone. The three included USB modes support the Samsung PC software, the Windows Media Player protocol and access to the MicroSD (if present) like a USB memory stick. There is an option to choose "ask on connection" - but all of them except Samsung PC software will be grayed out, so this setting is useless. SUMMARY The phone is fine for basic phone functions. At the exorbitant price of data plans, if you're paying that much monthly, you should invest in a phone that can make better use of the data capabilities. The MP3 player's crippling issues make it almost useless for this purpose unusable.
